About Us
The Leathertrace Bangladesh TCLP project aims to transform the tannery sector in Bangladesh into a model for sustainable leather production by developing and piloting a digital e-traceability system that will facilitate the adoption of sustainable practices within the sector. As one of the country’s key industries, the leather sector contributes significantly to economic growth and global supply chains, providing employment for hundreds of thousands of workers. Known for its high-quality raw materials and skilled labor force, the industry competes in international markets, particularly in Europe and North America. Despite its economic importance, the tannery sector faces significant sustainability challenges, which include inadequate waste management, reliance on toxic chemicals, limited transparency, and the negative social impacts which come with traditional tanning methods. These issues have led to soil and water pollution and adverse effects on local communities and ecosystems, highlighting the urgent need for a shift to more sustainable practices. As global markets increasingly demand higher environmental and social compliance, this project is designed to help Bangladesh’s tannery sector meet these expectations. Through the adoption of traceability technologies and circular economy principles, the project seeks to position the industry as a global leader in sustainable and ethical leather production. The Leathertrace Bangladesh TCLP project is funded by the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution Programme (SMEP). The SMEP programme is funded by UK International Development and implemented in partnership with UN Trade and Develpoment (UNCTAD).
